Pro-BNP lawyers demand new Bar Council polls
They brought charges of graft and politicisation of the body against the incumbent Bar Council leaders.
Addressing a rally in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court, JAOP leaders alleged that the council leaders were realising a huge amount of money from the new entrants to the Bar across the country.
"The dignity and position of the council has been lowered due to its politicisation under the present leadership," said JAOP leaders.
Demanding resignation of the council leaders, JAOP leaders suggested formation of an interim committee to run the council until a new committee is formed through election.
JAOP leaders also said they would declare Barrister Amir-Ul Islam, vice chairman of the Bar Council, 'unwanted in the council' unless the present committee is dissolved immediately.
Earlier, nearly one hundred lawyers travelling in buses reached 'Kadam Foara' yesterday afternoon and marched towards the council building in a procession, but police intercepted them in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court.
Presided over by Advocate Fazlur Rahman Khan the rally was addressed, among others, by advocates Masud Ahmed Talukder, Mohsin Mia, Sanaullah Mia and Lutfe Alam.
Meanwhile, the Sammilita Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad (SASP), another platform of lawyers, will hold a rally today at the Supreme Court Bar Association demanding cancellation of amendments to the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) and the Bar Council Order.
The National Bar Association of Bangladesh (NBAB) yesterday asked the government to send the amended CPC to the Law Commission for scrutiny.
The NBAB also demanded that the government postpone implementation of the amended CPC, which is to take effect from October 1.
