Give promotion on basis of efficiency

Making her introductory speech to open the meeting of Army Headquarters Selection Board-2003, Khaleda Zia said professional outlook, patriotism, working aptness, social consciousness and qualities of characteristics should be given due consideration in the case of promotion of an army officer.

The prime minister, who also holds the charge of the ministry of defence, said the army headquarters selection board plays a significant role in the case of promotion of the army officers.

Khaleda Zia said her government wants a professional army for which raising of professional army officers is needed.

She laid stress on giving promotion to the army officers in due time on the basis of qualification and efficiency for upholding highest form of discipline, efficiency and professionalism.

She said members of the armed forces have been continuing to contribute to the development, aiding the civil administration, serving the distressed people side by side performing their sacred duty of safeguarding the national independence and sovereignty.

She lauded contribution of the army for bringing international fame, honour and prestige for the country through successfully performing their duties of peacekeeping in different parts of the globe under the UN Peace Keeping Mission.

Earlier, on her arrival at the army headquarters, the prime minister was received by chief of the Army Staff Lieutenant General Hassan Mashhud Chowdhury.

Principal Staff Officer Major General AM Mahmuduzzaman, Defence Secretary KM Ehsanul Huq, formation commanders and all serving generals attended the meeting.

Chief of the Army Staff briefed the prime minister about the meeting of the Army Headquarters Selection Board, which has been entrusted with the task of promoting the army officers from the rank of lieutenant colonel to brigadier general.
