Flood situation dips as Ganges, Padma swell
The rivers in the Ganges-Padma basin yesterday recorded further rise at all points and may swell further.
A report from Rajbari says that erosion of the Padma took a serious turn at Tengrapara area under Goalundo upazila in Rajbari district. The Padma is flowing above the danger level at Goalundo and recorded further rise yesterday.
Three-fourths of the embankment at Tengrapara have already gone under water.
Local officials of the Water Development Board told newsmen that the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Goalundo is threatened by the rise in water level and erosion.
They apprehended that many parts of Rajbari sadar upazila and Goalundo might be submerged if the Padma continues to rise. Sources said standing crops in some parts of the two upazila have gone under water and more areas were inundated yesterday.
According to a bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) yesterday, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna witnessed fall at all points.
Out of the 85 monitoring stations, 36 points recorded rise, 32 points recorded fall and five points remained steady. Rivers were flowing above the danger mark at six points during the last 24 hours.
In the Brahmaputra basin, several rivers recorded fall, but the Teesta registered a slight rise at Dalia and receded by 7cm at Kaunia. The Buriganga also rose by 6cm at Dhaka. The Balu at Demra is flowing above the danger level by 19cm. The Lakhya at Narayanganj recorded a slight rise. The Turag at Mirpur rose by 9cm. The Kaliganga registered a 4cm rise at Taraghat. The Dhaleswari observed further rise at Jagir and remained steady at Rekabi Bazar.
In the Ganges basin, the Padma registered a further rise at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge, Goalundo and Bhagyakul. The river is flowing above the danger level at Pankha by 99cm, 26cm at Goalundo and 34cm at Bhagyakul.
The river is flowing only 11cm below the danger level at Rajshahi. The Karatoa recorded a rise of 21cm at Panchagarh. The Mahananda at Chapainawabganj registered further rise while the Chhato Jamuna at Naogaon also swelled.
The Atrai rose at Mahadevpur while the Gorai at Gorai Railway Bridge point recorded further rise. The Kumar registered rise at Faridpur. The Arial Khan rose at Madaripur crossing the danger mark yesterday morning.
In the Meghna basin, the Kushiyara witnessed a slight rise at Amalshid and Sherpur. The Manu registered further rise at Manu Railway Bridge and Moulvibazar. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar recorded further rise. But the rivers in this basin are flowing below the danger level.
In the South-Eastern Hill basin, the Muhuri fell sharply at Parshuram, Halda at Narayanhat and Panchpukuria. The Sangu receded at Bandarban but swelled at Dohazari. The rivers in this basin are flowing below the danger mark.
