AL won't join CPA meet
The main opposition Awami League (AL) will not join the Common-wealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference accusing the government of politicising it.
Abdul Hamid, deputy leader of the opposition, yesterday formally conveyed the decision to Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar.
"Owing to the government's attitude to the opposition, it is not possible for us to join the CPA conference," Hamid said in his letter to the Speaker.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar, chairman of the steering committee of the conference, sent a letter to the opposition deputy leader on Sunday, urging the AL to join the programmes preceding the conference.
The conference will be held in Dhaka on October 4 to 12 this year, which is likely to be attended by over 400 delegates from 48 countries.
