A group of residents of the city's Rajabazar area yesterday ransacked the Shamarita Hospital at Panthapath protesting the death of a day labourer whom on-duty doctors failed to revive after a fatal electric shock.

Police and hospital sources said locals from West Rajabazar brought in critically injured Kabir Hossain, 30, at about 1:00pm after he had accidentally touched a live electric wire while working at a house at Rajabazar yesterday.

Failing to feel the victim's pulse, emergency doctors referred Kabir to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died.

As the news spread, a group of angry people attacked the hospital smashing its windowpanes and damaging furniture.

"A group of 12 to 15 people came to the hospital at about 1:30pm and started pelting stones and bottles at the windows," said a wayside vendor near the hospital.

The hospital's Managing Director Dr ABM Harun said doctors had carried out an ECG test and pushed a lifesaving injection into the victim, but as his condition deteriorated, he was referred to the DMCH.

No case was filed till writing of this report at 8:00pm.
