A businessman was strangled in an apparent mugging incident in Dhaka last night, police said.

The body of Yusuf, 35, owner of a brick kiln at Konabari in Gazipur, was retrieved from the road near Azad Mosque in Gulshan at around 9:15pm.

The body bore several scars in the hand and shoulder.

Shafiqur Rahman, father of the victim, told police that Yusuf left Konabari in a rented yellow taxicab at around 8:00pm for his residence in East Tejturi Bazaar in Dhaka.

Police suspect that a gang of muggers having links with the cabby got into the cab somewhere in the road and killed the businessman on the way.

"We are also checking whether he had enmity with anyone," said an officer of the Gulshan Police Station last night.

The body was kept at the police station till writing of this report early today.
