JCD calls strike at RMC

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) called an indefinite strike yesterday after around 24 students were injured in an armed attack by alleged extortionists.

The JCD also raised a three-point demand, which includes ensuring security of students, immediate arrest of the extortionists and setting up a police outpost on the campus.

Sources said hundreds of the RMC students protested widespread extortion under police protection. They blocked the highway adjacent to the college for three hours and staged a sit-in before the college principal's office.

At around 11.30am, a group of 30 armed extortionists of Ghoshpara and Shipaipara led by Rabbul attacked the demonstrating students, injuring several. They also hurled cocktails and shot blank fires in presence of police.

Critically injured student Nirupom was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while others took first aid.

The JCD later drove away policemen from the campus for helping the extortionists.

The RMC academic council at an urgent meeting yesterday afternoon expressed their solidarity with the students' demands and condemned the role of police.

Earlier, on Thursday afternoon the extortionists foiled a film show, organised by the RMC Film Society for the aid of flood-affected people, as their demands for money and free tickets were not met.
