Bangladesh Chat, Suta O Bastrakal Sramik Federation yesterday urged the government to withdraw its decision to lay off country's jute mills one after another.

Addressing a rally in the city, federation leaders also demanded immediate reopening of three jute mills in Khulna which were laid off recently.

"Eliminate pervading corruption and politicisation of the mills, but not the production," said M A Wahed Murad, general secretary of the federation.

He said at least 1,500 permanent workers have been rendered jobless following the lay-off of three jute mills.

Federation leaders demanded immediate payment of all dues of the workers and employees.

They also urged the government to give up its privatisation policy in the public interest.

Federation President Fayz Ullah Khandaker said the government has undertaken a move to close down the country's mills and factories to meet the desire of foreign donors and financial organisations.

"The government is indiscriminately laying off mills and factories without identifying the actual causes of perennial loss", he told The Daily Star.

The federation also demanded implementation of its 10-point demand.

Mokhlesur Rahman, Mokaddem Hossain, Shamsul Alam, and Shahjahan Kabir were present on the occasion.
