ICT to reduce poverty

The government has taken steps to use Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool for reducing poverty as well as bridging the digital divide.

"Now this is the age of ICT revolution, so our all efforts are being formulated towards maximum use of ICT," said Syed Marghub Murshed, Chairman of Bangladesh Telephone Regulatory Commission.

Secretary for Science, Information and Communication Technology, Karar Mahmudul Hasan said the government has taken initiatives to set up computer laboratories in 128 schools and colleges across the country.

Every school and college will be provided with 20 computers and other accessories so that students can have maximum benefit from the computer labs, the Secretary said.

They were speaking at the launching of the temporary office of World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Working Group Bangladesh recently at BTRC premises.

The group is working on Bangladesh's position paper and plan of action ahead of World Summit of Information Society of United Nations to be held next December in Genava.

A number of heads of the state will attend the first-ever global summit of Information Society.
