'Raise voice against India's water diversion plan'
The PJMBA made the call at its first meting at the National Press Club with Barrister Mainul Hossain, first member of the committee
in the chair.
Speakers at the meeting warned of the disastrous effects of the Indian project on Bangladesh saying this draconian move would destroy its eco-system, damage the environment and ruin the economy.
They urged all to come forward to create national and international public opinion against the project to put pressure on the Indian government to abandon it.
BSS adds: Member-Secretary of the National Committee Quamrul Islam Chowdhury gave a run-down of different programmes which would be launched by the committee to create awareness against the project.
Daily New Age Editor Enayetullah Khan emphasised the need for sensitising the political leaders about the Indian project.
National Press Club General Secretary Shaukat Mahmud suggested consolidated assessment of the adverse impacts of the project.
Three different sub-committees were also formed at the meeting while the technical, legal and media sub-committees would submit the report by next Thursday.
Coordinator of the National Committee Golam Mohiuddin Khan, IUCN Bangladesh national Committee Chairperson Mahfuz Ullah, BELA Director Syeda Rizwana Hasan and engineer Mahbubur Rahman also took part in the discussion.
