2,500 cases disposed of under Speedy Trial Act
"In 136 cases, 46 were awarded death penalty and 86 life imprisonment," Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed said this while he was inaugurating a workshop here yesterday, said an official release.
Legal and Judicial Capacity Building Project under the law ministry organised the daylong training workshop on "Alternative Dispute Resolution".
Moudud said it was proved that quick disposal of cases was possible even with limited resource and in an unfavourable environment if the government has a good intention.
The government has undertaken some historical and revolutionary steps to build a progressive, time-befitting and modern judicial system, he said.
It is responsibility of both the judges and lawyers to see that people's right to get justice is not denied because of delay. He sought their sincere cooperation in making mediation process successful in the disposal of cases.
He said apart from the government, all concerned should be conscious to keep the judicial system on the right tract and reach it to the doorsteps of the common people.
He said the government has taken up pilot projects in five districts, including Khulna, to modernise the case management and court administration.
The government is also planning to build a network system bringing judicial system under internet and database, he added.
Khulna District and Sessions Judge M Abdul Hai presided while Khulna City Corporation Mayor Tayebur Rahman and former Chief Justice Mostafa Kamal were the special guests. Justice Anwarul Huq also spoke on the occasion.
Moudud exchanged views with the leaders of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum at the Circuit House and laid foundation stone of the extension building of the district judge's court, to be built with more than TK 5.08 crore under Legal and Judicial Capacity Project.
