Literacy rate 62 per cent
The figures were disclosed at the first meeting of the Standing Committee on Primary and Mass Education Ministry held here yesterday with its chair-manHelaluzzaman Talukder in the chair.
The secretary concerned explained overall activities of the ministry of primary and mass education.
The meeting was told that 95 per cent teachers of the government primary schools and 52 per cent of non-government registered primary schools have been given training.
The present government has appointed a total of 23,471 teachers, including 2,900 headmasters, 1,550 assistant teachers, and 5,000 in the project, the meeting was told. It was possible till now to appoint 37.60 per cent female teachers although there is a provision for appointment of 60 per cent.
The committee chairman requested all concerned to submit in the next meeting separate reports on the activities of different organisations under the ministry from 1995-2001 to 2001-2003.
Committee members Md. Mojibar Rahman, Alhaj Nurul Islam Moni and Md. Nazimuddin Alam attended the meeting. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Primary and Mass Education Affairs Prof Jahanara Begum also attended the meeting on special invitation.
