Postal operator gets 22 yrs jail in graft case

Mohammad Masud Chowdhury, a postal operator (suspended) of General Post Office (GPO), Dhaka, has been sentenced to 22 years' rigorous imprisonment in a graft case.

Mohammad Azizul Haq, judge of the Special Court for Dhaka Division, yesterday gave the verdict in presence of the accused.

In the case filed with Motijheel Police Station, it was alleged that Masud Chowdhury while in the Pension Department of the GPO during the year of 1997-1998 misappropriated Tk 13.36 lakh making 34 false pension vouchers.

Inspector (Administration) of the GPO, Bose Biplob Kumar filed a corruption case accusing Masud Chowdhury on August 5, 1999.

The investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet against the accused on November 26, 2000. The trial of the case began on January 9, 2001.

Six out of 15 prosecution witnesses were cross-examined during the trial.
