Gono Bishwabidyalay students boycott classes, exams

The students of Gono Bishwabidyalay boycotted their all classes and examinations yesterday demanding immediate registration of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) department with the health ministry.

As the department is yet to be registered, the students would not be able to apply for any government job on completion of their course.

The students said they have enforced the programme as the university authorities did not take any initiative for registration and they vowed to continue their movement until their demand is met.

Earlier on Tuesday, the students confined Vice Chancellor Dr Qasem Chowdhury and Registrar Md Delwar Hossain for five hours from 12.00 noon to 5.00pm to press home their demand.

Gono Bishwabidyalay introduced the BDS course in 1998 under its medical faculty with the permission of the education ministry but without the registration with the health ministry.

The department has now 45 students under five batches. Students of first batch will complete their 4-year honours course within 5 months.

"The authorities earlier assured us about the permission. But we are now in uncertainty about our academic life" said Mili, a final year student.

The government has decided recently that private university will not be allowed to introduce or continue BDS course under their medical faculty.
