1 killed, 70 hurt in gas cylinder explosion

Police and witnesses said Abul Kashem, operator at Jharna Ice Mills, died on the spot.

Of the injured, 30 were hospitalised and the rest given first aid.

The gas cylinder exploded with a big bang, blowing up the roof of the tin-shed factory. The blast also caused a fire.

Fishermen, boatmen and children, who queued to collect ice,

suffered burn injuries.

Thirty people were admitted to the local upazila health complex and Barisal Medical College Hospital.

Rescue operation by police and local people was hampered as toxic gas spread in the area after the blast.
