'Ocean piracy doubles'

Ocean piracy has doubled in Bangladesh's waterways in last six months of the current year compared to those of last year, said International Maritime Bureau (IMB), a Malaysia based international organisation.

Twenty-three incidents of ocean piracy had occurred in Bangladesh's waterways during the period while it was only 11 in 2002, the report added.

According to the report, 200 incidents of ocean piracy had occurred across the world in last six months.

Sixteen crews of sea vessels died and nearly 200 others made hostages in these incidents, it added.

Talking to BBC last night, Captain Ahsanullah Azim, director general of Department of Ocean Vessel of Bangladesh, said IMB report regarding Bangladesh is not based on fact.

"The incidents that have occurred in Bangladesh's waterways don't fall under the definition of piracy and about 50 per cent of these incidents is false, "he added.
