MPs have to wait longer for NAM flats

Lawmakers will have to wait longer than anticipated to get allotments of the under-construction apartment blocks in the city, resolved a meeting of the House Committee of the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday.

With Chief Whip Khandakar Delwar Hossain in the chair, the meeting at the Sangsad Bhabhan reviewed the construction of 324 flats initially undertaken to accommodate visiting dignitaries of a scheduled NAM (Non-aligned Movement) Summit. The summit venue was eventually shifted from Dhaka and the government decided to allocate the flats to Members of Parliament.

Engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) informed the House Committee meeting yesterday that construction of the NAM flats was not complete due to fund constraint and it will take another six months to complete the task subject to the availability of Tk 19 crore.

The meeting, however, set a September deadline for completion of the remaining work.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas had earlier told parliament that the flats could be allocated in the current month.
