Parents' fatal disciplining

Five-year-old Tonni died from aggressive correction allegedly by her parents in Pallabi yesterday.

The arrested mother Asma Begum told police that she was trying to discipline her baby but did not understand that she might die, the duty-officer of the Pallabi Police Station said.

The incident came to light while the parents were burying Tonni in a field near Porabari Basti in Kalyanpur at 11:45am yesterday.

Tipped off, Sub-inspector Mustafizur Rahman of the Mirpur Police Station went to the place and recovered Tonni's body. The body bore marks of burns in the legs and bruises in other parts.

Later, the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.

Police arrested Tonni's mother Asma and father Mahmudul Haq Milan. Milan runs a small cigarette stall at Pallabi.

A murder case was filed against the parents.

"She would never listen to what we said," Asma told Pallabi police, "and exasperated by her attitude, I was trying to mend her ways over the last few days".

"As Tonni fell sick yesterday morning, we were taking her to the DMCH, but she died on the way," Asma said.
