Bar protests appointment of judges

The demands include making the process of appointment of High Court judges transparent, putting an end to corruption both in the lower and the higher tiers of judiciary, withdrawal of the provision of compulsory tax return of lawyers and making the Supreme Judicial Council 'effective' in appointing judges in the higher judiciary.

A delegation of the bar led by Barrister Mainul Hosein met Minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Moudud Ahmed yesterday and handed over a memorandum containing the demands, said a press release.

"Appointment of judges in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has become a politically serious controversial issue as there are talks about pro-Awami League judges and pro-BNP judges," the memorandum said.

A board should be formed for appointment of High Court judges, it said.
