September 11

1922 - A British mandate was proclaimed in Palestine. It came into effect at the end of the month, despite Arab protests.

2001 - Four hijacked planes crashed into New York's twin World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon in Washington and a field in Pennsylvania killing 2,973 people. The  coordinated attack was planned and executed by al-Qaeda.

2012 - US Consulate attacked in Benghazi, Libya with American staff member dying in the clashes.
