30 BNP leaders sued in Jamalpur sabotage case

Police today filed a case against 30 BNP leaders and activists on charges of attempting to sabotage the Jamalpur district Awami League's tri-annual council.

Police arrested five BNP activists in connection with the incident and handed them over to the court this afternoon.

Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar filed the case with Melandaha Police Station today, SI Atiqur Islam, the investigating officer, confirmed this to our local correspondent.

The arrestees were identified as Aminur Rahman Renu, 50, vice president of Melandaha BNP; Abdul Aziz, 45, joint general secretary of Melandaha BNP; Fahaduzzaman Nabin, 32, member secretary of local Swechchhasebak Dal; Juba Dal activists Samiul Islam, 26 and Samidul Islam, 35.

The triennial council was held yesterday at the Jamalpur Zilla School's ground where AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest.

Quoting the case statement, SI Atiqur Rahman said that acting on a tip-off, police raided Aminul Islam Renu's house in Shahajadpur village of the upazila, where several BNP members were creating on a plan to sabotage AL's council. Police later arrested five people from the house while most of them fled.

District BNP President Faridul Kabir Talukdar Shamim said no act of sabotage has taken place but a case has been filed in a planned way to counter the movement of BNP.
