Mircea Lucescu, the veteran coach who led Shakhtar Donetsk to European glory and managed Romania across two separate eras, has died aged 80, the Romanian Football Federation said on Tuesday.

The Romanian football federation (FRF) announced on Thursday 80-year-old coach Mircea Lucescu has left his position after missing out on qualification for this year's World Cup.

Romania turned back the clock on Tuesday when they appointed 79-year-old Mircea Lucescu as their new national coach - 38 years after he left the post.
