Bangladesh is going through one of its most precarious social, economic and political phases to date, with multiple strange layers in between. The cancellation of various shows and even physical attacks at scale nationwide, including arson, mark a new low. However, the tension between particular groups of ideologues; labelling each other, and other forms of practices they dislike, as “oposhingskriti”, or degenerate art/culture (which reminds me of Entartete Kunst, a term popularised by the party of a certain funny-moustached German leader)—is nothing new. In that context, a significant population still considers art practices like rock and metal music as “degenerates within degenerates”, an apogee of “oposhingskriti” on Bengali soil; despite the scene producing some of the finest artistes and musical creations from this region.

Popular Bangladeshi rock band Mechanix is celebrating two decades of its musical journey with a mega concert in Dhaka today (Saturday).

Imran Ahmed, former guitarist of the renowned rock band Mechanix and an alumnus of Government Laboratory High School (Batch 02), has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

“Boistwami Rock Fest” is making its return this year and is scheduled to take place tomorrow at Sundari Cafe and Art Space in the capital’s Purbachal New Town.

A new reality talent show, “The Cage”, aims to elevate the rock band scene in Bangladesh. Launched to provide a platform for emerging rock bands, the competition is designed to showcase undiscovered musical talent from across the country.

Despite the ceaseless drizzle in Dhaka, brought about by the deep depression soon to evolve into a cyclone, hundreds of metalheads braved the weather to storm into mosh pits at the "Legacy of Metal Revived" event last Friday at the Liberation War Museum auditorium.

The song has been penned by Sheikh M Reaz, drummer of Mechanix. “Escape” also contains a rap verse by Black Zang. Shishir Ahmed directed and supervised the composition of the song.

Mechanix was one of the first bands in Bangladesh to introduce true heavy metal to the scene, alongside Powersurge in the cult hit programme DRockstars a decade ago.
