After contesting the February 12 national election as part of an alliance, Jamaat-e-Islami has begun preparations to take part in the local government polls independently.

A commission needs to be formed to review and reform the local government system, which was now being run in an “ambiguous” way, and its electoral system should also be amended, speakers at a conference said yesterday.

The cabinet has approved the proposal to hold local body elections on a partisan basis. We understand the merit of the change.
