India has extended the countrywide coronavirus-induced lockdown till May 31 and framed new guidelines that largely leave it to states to decide on colour-coding of contagion hotspots and allowing shops and markets, among other economic activities, to resume functioning outside containment zones.

India has succeeded in minimising coronavirus transmission in 30 days of the lockdown so far, the country’s health ministry says.

The Indian government has said it has no plans to extend the 21-day nationwide lockdown, which ends on April 14, to check the spread of coronavirus.
