Azmeri Haque Badhan, known for her powerful portrayals of female characters such as Rehana in “Rehana Maryam Noor” and Sultana in “Guti”, is an active advocate for women's rights.

The frameworks of portrayals of gender-based violence in our local productions have been birthed from the need to give voice to the oppressed Biranganas (war heroines)—as portrayed through several films or dramas throughout the years.

The actress is celebrating her 41st birthday today and spoke with The Daily Star about her celebration and upcoming projects.

The march is scheduled for Friday (August 30) at 11:59 pm, starting from Shahbagh and proceeding toward the National Parliament. Badhan urges widespread participation, stating, “I’m going. I urge everyone to join. The more people that come, the bigger this movement will become.”

With the country now submerged in one of the worst floods in recent memory, Badhan is once again stepping up to support those in need. She is not only trying to assist flood victims personally but is also encouraging others to join her in this humanitarian effort. In a recent public appeal, the “Rehana Maryam Noor” actress urged everyone to donate clothing, especially dry clothes, which are urgently needed by those who have lost their homes and belongings in the floodwaters.

In a joint statement, the assembled artistes addressed the recent turmoil, saying, "We have taken down the dictator through a bloody mass uprising led by the students of our country. We deeply remember the martyred who were brutally killed by Sheikh Hasina's regime. It's very unfortunate that we are yet to get the identification of many and have a confirmed number of the people who have lost their lives."

Mamo, along with her colleagues, consistently supported the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, even joining the protests in the streets.

In such challenging times, when protesters and civilians were indiscriminately killed, wholesale arrests, block raids, and a nationwide internet shutdown violated citizens' fundamental rights, keeping the nation on edge for weeks– only a few had the courage to raise their voices against the oppression and injustice.

Addressing these issues, Azmeri Haque Badhan called for an end to the violence and chaos.
