The home cooling blueprint
As the record-breaking heatwaves of 2026 collide with the festive preparations for Eid-ul-Adha, the air conditioner has evolved from a seasonal luxury into an urban necessity. In the weeks leading up to the festival, a massive surge in the demand for household appliances is being observed across Bangladesh. Specifically, refrigerators are being sought after for meat preservation, while air conditioners are being prioritised to combat the stifling humidity of May and June.
Financing the Festive Chill
To manage the high costs of these essential units, bank-led financial solutions are being extensively utilised. Credit cards are frequently employed to avail of zero-interest Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) schemes, allowing families to spread the financial load of a premium inverter AC over several months.
According to Tasnim Hussain, Head of Cards at EBL, the festive window is a primary driver for consumer durable financing. She notes, “Eid-ul-Adha is a peak season for us. Credit card usage and EMI facilities are significantly increased during this time.”
The digital ecosystem has been further strengthened by mobile financial services (MFS). For consumers who prefer app-based management, EMI payments for top brands like Walton and Butterfly are now being facilitated through the bKash app. This integration allows users to pay their monthly installments conveniently from home, bridging the gap between retail showrooms and digital wallets. This convenience is a significant factor as household budgets are often stretched during the dual pressures of a heatwave and Eid shopping.
Market Trends and Energy Efficiency
The industry is also seeing a shift in how consumers interact with their cooling technology. Md Noor A Alam, Deputy Managing Director of Elite Hitech Industries Ltd, believes the market is entering a transformative phase.
“Nowadays, people want their air conditioners to align with the aesthetics of their interiors,” says Alam. He observes that “Lifestyle ACs” with customisable panels are becoming increasingly popular in urban areas.
Regarding energy management, Alam emphasises that smart technology is no longer just a branding gimmick. “Users are going to rely more and more on mobile app controls in the coming years. Mainly because it gives them much better traceability of their energy consumption,” he states. For those looking to save on bills immediately, he recommends a simple adjustment: “Even a shift from 25°C to 27°C can reduce electricity consumption by more than 15 per cent.”
The Invisible Threat
While comfort is the goal, safety must be the priority. Modern ACs now use eco-friendly refrigerants like R32, which are better for the planet but are highly flammable. You might not realise it, but a minor leak can turn a closed room into a dangerous environment. If you suspect a gas leak, perhaps you hear a faint hissing or smell a strange chemical odor—your first instinct might be to reach for the remote. Do not do that.
Every flick of a switch creates a tiny spark that could ignite the air around you. Instead, the main circuit breaker should be shut down immediately. Do not flip any light switches or use your mobile phone in that room. Open every window and door to let the gas escape.
Furthermore, fatal errors are often made by unqualified technicians during maintenance. One of the most terrifying mistakes occurs during leak testing when technicians use oxygen cylinders. This can create an internal fireball. You must insist that your technician uses nitrogen for testing and never oxygen or compressed air. As Md Noor A Alam highlights, proper technical support is vital: “We conduct technician training every year or every two years to refresh their knowledge and ensure customers receive proper technical support.”
Despite the economic stresses, Alam remains optimistic about the transition to better technology. “Trade-in and buy-back schemes are helping phase out obsolete and power-hungry cooling units,” he mentions, adding that these initiatives are a no-brainer for those looking to save on future electricity costs. By combining smart bank financing with professional maintenance, Bangladeshi households can enjoy a cool, safe, and financially sustainable Eid with their air conditioners.
