NUMBERS 68

After 68 years of prolonged struggle, nearly 52,000 inhabitants of 162 enclaves inside Bangladesh and India marked their last day of statelessness, officially becoming citizens either of the two countries. The midnight between july 31 and August 1 also became the historical moment when the enclaves in each other's territory got combined with the respective countries, thus ending one of the most complex border disputes of the world that has kept thousands in stateless limbo for last 68 years. To celebrate this victory, the jubilant crowds from these areas lit 68 candles, released 68 balloons, organised processions and traditional Bangalee sports throughout the day.
