The summer James Rodriguez ruled the world
There are World Cups that live on through trophies, and then there are World Cups remembered for the players who briefly made football feel like poetry. For many fans, the 2014 FIFA World Cup belonged to one such player -- James Rodriguez.
Amid the carnival colours, samba rhythms and endless drama in Brazil, the tournament produced countless unforgettable stories. Yet few were as captivating as the meteoric rise of a 22-year-old Colombian who arrived as a promising talent and left as football’s newest global superstar.
Colombia had not enjoyed a truly memorable World Cup campaign since 1990, and expectations surrounding the national side in 2014 were immense. But just before the tournament began, disaster struck. Their talisman and goal machine, Radamel Falcao, was ruled out through injury, seemingly draining the dream of its colour before a ball had even been kicked.
Into that void stepped James. Armed with a magical left foot and an innocent smile that quickly charmed the world, the attacking midfielder transformed the summer of 2014 into his own personal stage. Wearing Colombia’s iconic No. 10 shirt, he played with a blend of elegance, creativity and fearlessness that completely consumed football audiences. His arrival was announced emphatically in the group stage. James scored against Greece national football team, Ivory Coast national football team and Japan national football team, but it was his dazzling cameo against Japan that truly hinted at something extraordinary. Introduced at halftime, he scored a brilliant goal and produced two sublime assists in just 45 minutes.
Then came the celebrations -- that iconic salsa dance with his teammates near the corner flag, which almost became the unofficial soundtrack of the tournament.
Watching James glide through midfield, Colombia coach Jose Pekerman knew he possessed something special.
“I never doubted James’s talent,” Pekerman said proudly at the time. “He has everything required to prove himself as a world-class player on the biggest stage. He is the kind of player who can change a match on his own.”
But James elevated himself from breakout star to football folklore on June 28 at the historic Maracana Stadium.
Colombia faced Uruguay national football team in the Round of 16. In the 28th minute, midfielder Abel Aguilar cushioned a header into James’s path just outside the penalty area. What followed felt less like a footballing action and more like an artist painting a masterpiece in real time.
Before the ball even arrived, James glanced over his shoulder to check goalkeeper Fernando Muslera’s position. He controlled the dropping ball with his chest, swivelled instantly, and unleashed a ferocious left-footed volley before it touched the ground. The strike crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, leaving Muslera helpless.
It was a goal that seemed to mock physics itself. The volley was later voted the best goal of the tournament and earned James the FIFA Puskas Award.
Even Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was left mesmerised.
“There are players in football born with something special,” Tabarez said after the match. “Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez -- they do things ordinary people cannot imagine. James Rodriguez belongs to that category. I think he is the best player in this World Cup.”
James scored twice that night to send Colombia into the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.
The fairytale eventually ended against hosts Brazil national football team in the last eight. Yet even in defeat, James produced another iconic image -- calmly converting a penalty while a giant green grasshopper sat on his right arm, as if nature itself had paused to witness the moment.
When Colombia lost 2-1 and the final whistle blew, James collapsed in tears on the pitch. Then came another unforgettable scene: Brazil defender David Luiz embracing the young Colombian and urging the entire stadium to applaud him. It felt like football collectively acknowledging the birth of a new superstar.
In just five matches, James scored six goals and provided two assists, winning the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer.
One World Cup had changed everything. Almost immediately afterward, Florentino Perez decided to bring him to Real Madrid CF. James joined from AS Monaco FC in a deal worth around 80 million euros, with nearly 45,000 fans turning up at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to welcome him.
In the years that followed, injuries and inconsistency prevented him from permanently sustaining those dizzying heights. Spells at FC Bayern Munich and Everton FC brought flashes of brilliance but never quite recreated the magic of that Brazilian summer.
Still, perhaps that is precisely why the story endures.
Some footballers dominate eras. Others, for a brief moment, capture the imagination of the entire sport and leave behind memories untouched by time. The summer of 2014 belonged to James Rodriguez, and no statistic will ever fully measure what he made people feel during those extraordinary few weeks in Brazil.
