Ronaldo’s greatest feats on football’s biggest stage

Star Sports Desk

Since stepping into professional football in 2002, Cristiano Ronaldo has dazzled audiences from Lisbon to Manchester, Madrid, and now Saudi Arabia. He has conquered Europe with both club and country, and in his glittering career, he is steadily moving toward the unbelievable milestone of 1,000 goals.

The Portuguese superstar has achieved almost every success imaginable for a footballer. There remains only one regret -- winning a World Cup for his country. Could 2026 finally be the year that unfulfilled dream comes true?

The key to Ronaldo’s success has always been his relentless drive to surpass himself. During his time at Manchester United, he transformed from a skillful dribbler into a devastating goal machine. With thunderous long-range strikes, freekicks, and extraordinary headers, he became truly unmatched.

After winning nine trophies with United, he moved to Real Madrid in 2009. For the Spanish giants, he scored 450 goals in just 438 matches and left as the club’s all-time leading scorer, having won 15 titles.

He then won five more trophies with Juventus before returning to Manchester United for a brief second spell. Since January 2023, the forward, famously known as CR7, has been playing for Saudi club Al Nassr, with whom he recently won the Pro League title.

Ronaldo’s World Cup journey in numbers

Ronaldo is one of the few players to have appeared in a record five World Cups. Since making his debut on football’s biggest stage in 2006, he has represented Portugal in the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups as well. Along this remarkable journey, he joined Germany’s Lothar Matthäus, Argentina’s Lionel Messi, and Mexico’s Antonio Carbajal, Rafael Marquez, and Andres Guardado – all of whom also played in five World Cups.

Not only did he participate, but the Portuguese superstar also achieved an extraordinary feat as the first and only footballer in history to score in five different World Cups. He set this unique record during the group stage of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, when he converted a penalty in the 65th minute against Ghana at Doha’s Stadium 974. Notably, only four players in football history have scored in four different World Cups -- Brazil’s Pele, Argentina’s Messi, and Germany’s Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose.

CR7 also holds the record for the oldest player to score a hattrick in World Cup history. He achieved the feat on June 15, 2018, in Sochi during a thrilling clash against Spain at the Russia World Cup. At 33 years and 130 days old, Ronaldo scored all three of Portugal’s goals in the unforgettable 3-3 draw against the Spaniards.

The Qatar World Cup once again proved that age is just a number for him. In Portugal’s 3-2 victory over Ghana, Ronaldo was 37 years and 292 days old when he scored the penalty that broke the deadlock. With that goal, he became the third-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history.

The Portuguese captain is also the all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying history -- the battle to reach football’s grandest tournament. In 52 qualifying matches, he scored a record 41 goals, surpassing Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz, who previously held the record with 39 goals. Ronaldo’s goal-scoring spree in the qualifiers began during the road to the 2006 World Cup, where he scored seven goals in 12 matches. Although he failed to score in seven matches during the 2010 qualifiers, he netted eight goals in 10 matches for the 2014 qualifiers. In the 2018 qualifying campaign, he displayed a destructive form by scoring 15 goals in just nine matches. He then scored six goals in nine matches during the 2022 qualifiers and has continued his consistency with five goals in five matches in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Ronaldo also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances for Portugal in the tournament’s final stage. He has played 22 matches for his country on the world stage -- the fifth-highest number of appearances in overall World Cup history. Across those 22 matches, he has scored eight goals. However, he has still not managed to break Portugal’s all-time World Cup scoring record. Legendary Eusebio remains the country’s top scorer in World Cup history, having scored nine goals in just six matches during the 1966 World Cup.
