France back on top for first time since 2018; Bangladesh fall to 181
The latest FIFA World Rankings, released on Wednesday, delivered a significant shake-up at both ends of the footballing spectrum. While powerhouses in Europe celebrate a change of guard at the top, Bangladesh have faced a minor decline following a difficult international window in March.
At the summit, France have reclaimed the world number one spot for the first time since September 2018, leapfrogging both Spain and Argentina. This ascent was fueled by high-stakes victories over Brazil and Croatia, capitalising on a slip-up by Spain, who could only manage a draw against Egypt.
World champions Argentina also fell to third place, as their victories against lower-ranked opponents in Mauritania and Zambia offered fewer points than those earned by their European rivals.
Further down the top tier, Brazil find themselves in sixth place with Portugal moving into fifth.
With the 2026 World Cup set to kick off this June, this ranking cycle represents the final major movement for many nations before the tournament begins.
Meanwhile, the ranking update was less positive for Bangladesh fans. Javier Cabrera’s men slipped from 180th to 181st after losing 3-0 to a resurgent Vietnam on March 26 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Singapore in the Asian Cup qualifiers on March 31. These two results combined to cost the side 9.18 ranking points.
In stark contrast, Vietnam emerged as the biggest climbers, driven by their dominant performance against Bangladesh and a crucial 3-1 victory over Malaysia. They surged nine places to break into the top 100, landing at 99th, moving them up to 17th within the AFC region.
