BFL, Federation Cup deferred indefinitely

By Star Sports Report

Days after deciding to resume the second phase of the Bangladesh Football League (BFL) and the Federation Cup matches a week or so before the national elections, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has deferred those domestic football matches indefinitely.

A letter signed by BFF general secretary Emran Hossain reached the clubs recently. The letter stated that due to request from the participating clubs and request from the law enforcement agencies, the matches of the BFL and the Federation Cup have been postponed indefinitely.

The 10th round of the BFL was scheduled to begin on February 6, with five matches set for that round according to the pre-announced fixture list. In addition, two Federation Cup matches were scheduled for February 3.

Domestic football went into a month-long break following the first phase of the BFL on January 4, with the mid-term transfer window opening immediately. It was feared even at that time that football may not resume in early February, given February 12 as the date of national elections.

The indefinite deferral of BFL and Federation Cup puts the domestic season into uncertainty. While the decision has come as a respite for some clubs who have been struggling to pay players, some other clubs have questioned the ultimate fate of the league and the Federation Cup.
