Women’s Asia Cup begins today; Tigresses face Indonesia on Aug 31

The 10th edition of the ACC Women’s Asia Cup will get underway today with Thailand taking on Hong Kong, China in the opening match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE.

Like the previous five editions, the tournament will be held in T20 format. 2018 edition champions Bangladesh are drawn in Group B alongside reigning champions Sri Lanka, hosts the UAE and Indonesia.

Group A comprises seven-time champions India, Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong, China.

Bangladesh will begin their campaign against Indonesia on August 31 before taking on Sri Lanka on September 6. They will wrap up their group-stage fixtures against hosts the UAE on September 8.

Before leaving for the UAE, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty had set her sights on reaching the Asia Cup final.

“Our main target this time is to play in the final. We have played in the semi-finals before and then been knocked out. The same thing has happened repeatedly, so we want to break that barrier this time,” Joty said.

One of the marquee clashes of the group stage will see India take on Pakistan on September 5.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, scheduled for September 10 and 11, before the final on September 13.

All matches will be played under lights at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
