Mohammedan swoop for Nahid as DPL title race heats up

League leaders Mohammedan Sporting Club are set to strengthen their squad for the business end of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) by bringing in express pacer Nahid Rana, club officials confirmed on Sunday.

Mohammedan currently sit atop the standings with 12 points from seven matches, holding a two-point lead over second-placed Abahani.

Rana featured for archrivals Abahani in last season's DPL, but did not sign a contract with the club this year and also did not take a transfer token. Sensing an opportunity ahead of the crucial phase of the competition, Mohammedan moved to secure the pacer's services after reaching an understanding with Abahani.

"Rana was an Abahani player, but this year Abahani did not have a contract with him and he also did not take a transfer token. So we talked to Abahani and got clearance for the transfer," a Mohammedan official told The Daily Star.

Mohammedan sources said Rana is expected to feature in their upcoming match against Legends of Rupganj on June 2 before joining the national team's training camp on June 6 ahead of the ODI series against Australia.

The signing is set to be completed on Monday, with Rana also scheduled to begin training with Mohammedan on the same day.
