Latham braces for spin challenge in Bangladesh
New Zealand stand-in captain Tom Latham acknowledged the challenge that awaits his side in spin-friendly conditions as the Kiwis gear up for their upcoming white-ball series in Bangladesh.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, Latham stressed the importance of adapting quickly to subcontinental conditions, which differ significantly from those back home.
“We know that spin plays a massive part and that conditions will look different than they do in New Zealand. When traveling to a foreign environment, the preparation leading up to the game is vital to starting the series well. It is important that we adapt, and we hope to do that effectively,” Latham said.
A second-string New Zealand squad, depleted by the absence of at least 10 first-choice players due to commitments in franchise leagues, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today.
The touring party will reach Bangladesh in two phases, with a small group expected this afternoon and the bulk of the squad set to land around 11:00pm.
After a rest day, the visitors will begin their preparations with indoor training sessions at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.
Despite the absence of several senior players, Latham remained optimistic about the depth within the squad, highlighting the opportunity for less experienced cricketers to step up.
“With several players currently participating in the IPL and PSL, this tour presents opportunities for younger players or those with less experience than usual,” he said.
“However, every member of the squad has represented New Zealand at some point, whether in T20 or one-day cricket. The fact that everyone has international experience should bode well for the upcoming tour. Furthermore, gaining more experience for these players helps build depth throughout the lineup,” he added.
The three-match ODI series is set to begin on April 17 in Mirpur, with the second match scheduled at the same venue on April 20. The teams will then travel to Chattogram for the third and final ODI on April 23.
The T20I leg of the tour will commence in Chattogram on April 27, with the second match on April 29. The series will conclude in Dhaka with the final T20I on May 1.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh have retained the same squad that featured in their previous home series against Pakistan, with selectors opting for continuity.
The upcoming series offers the hosts a chance to build on their strong ODI form, having secured back-to-back home series wins against the West Indies and Pakistan, while also strengthening their push for direct qualification to the next World Cup.
