Tarique Rahman thanks all concerned for dignified farewell of Khaleda Zia
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has thanked members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, public officials and journalists for ensuring a dignified farewell to his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
In a Facebook post this morning, Tarique said that amid his family's "deep personal loss", the professionalism and empathy shown by various state institutions helped the nation conduct itself with dignity during Khaleda Zia's final rites.
He expressed gratitude to officers and personnel of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force for maintaining order throughout the funeral proceedings, noting that many remained on duty for long hours while showing sensitivity to the grief of mourners.
Tarique also thanked law-enforcement and security agencies, including the Home Adviser's office, police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar and VDP, Rapid Action Battalion and Armed Police Battalion, for facilitating the safe movement of large crowds during the janaza and burial.
Acknowledging intelligence agencies, he said the vigilance of DGFI, NSI and the Special Branch helped ensure overall security and the smooth conduct of the day.
He further appreciated the coordination provided by officials from the National Security Adviser's office, the Prime Minister's Security Office (AFD), DG SSF, and several ministries, including housing and public works, information and broadcasting, law, cultural affairs and religious affairs.
"You worked patiently and respectfully, helping millions of people gather and return safely, allowing families to mourn and pay their respects in peace," he said.
Tarique thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assisting foreign dignitaries who travelled to Bangladesh to convey condolences, saying their presence reflected the respect Khaleda Zia commanded internationally.
He also praised journalists from home and abroad for covering the funeral under challenging conditions, describing their work as vital in documenting the janaza prayers and burial for audiences worldwide.
Tarique extended his thanks to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and members of the advisory cabinet for attending the funeral and overseeing arrangements during the period of national mourning.
"On behalf of my family, I thank each of you not just as institutions, but as people," he said, adding that their efforts enabled the family and the nation to honour Khaleda Zia's memory with dignity.
