Political leaders across spectrum mourn death of Khaleda Zia
Leaders of various political parties and organisations have expressed condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her long political career and role in Bangladesh's democratic movements.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman expressed condolences, praying for Khaleda Zia's forgiveness and eternal peace.
In a message, he sought patience and strength for her family members, relatives and colleagues.
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam also expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, describing Khaleda Zia as a courageous leader of the anti-autocracy movement.
He wrote that her leadership helped guide the people of Bangladesh in securing democratic rights and said she played an "extraordinary role" in establishing the parliamentary system and restoring a democratic environment after the 1990 mass uprising.
"With her passing, a long and eventful chapter in Bangladesh's political history has come to an end," he wrote.
Islami Andolon Bangladesh Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, popularly known as Pir Saheb Charmonai, said Khaleda Zia was a prominent and significant figure in Bangladesh's political history.
He expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the forgiveness of her soul.
Ganosamhati Andolan Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki wrote in a Facebook post that he was deeply saddened by the death of the BNP chairperson and former prime minister, offering prayers following the news.
The central executive committee of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) also expressed deep sorrow in a statement, describing Khaleda Zia as a key leader of the united democratic movement against Ershad's military regime.
The statement said she would be remembered for her uncompromising role in the movement against military rule and her leadership during the 1990 mass uprising.
