"Innovation Through Imagination" at Dhaka College

We keep hearing that innovation is the key to turning around the economy of not only Dhaka, but also the whole nation. And we saw just that, when thousands of high school and college students, who are tomorrow's leaders in science, engineering, technology and mathematics, presented their works of creativity and imagination, at the 5th Shezan – Dhaka College Science Club National Science Exposition 2015, which was organised at the Dhaka College ground. Powered by Singularity, this festival of creativity was held on May 26-28, 2015. More than two thousands participants from different institutions all over Dhaka attended the fair to show their skills and concepts. The main attraction of the fair, the project displays were held from the second day. About 100+ projects were displayed. There was also an exhibition of a line-following robot on that day. The entire event consisted of Physics Olympiad, Math Olympiad, Chemistry Olympiad, Biology and Environment Olympiad, Informatics Olympiad, IQ test, sudoku, Rubik's Cube contest, photography contest, extempore speech and quiz competition. The segments were also divided in senior and junior categories, where senior category consisted of class 11-12 and the junior category consisted of class 6-10 or equivalent. On the last day of the fair, Nurul Islam Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Education, being the chief guest of the ending ceremony, gave out prizes to the top participants of the segments. The event came to an end with the musical performance by the band "Solitary Carnival".


Cooperation agreement between BUFT and Wuhan Textile University

BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) signed an Agreement of Cooperation on academic issues with Wuhan Textile University, China on May 24, 2015 at Prime Minister's Office, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Muzaffar U. Siddique, founder of BUFT and Chairman of the BOT and Prof. Wei Yiliang, President of Wuhan Textile University signed the agreement on behalf of their respective universities. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong were present on the occasion.  

Under the agreement, both universities will jointly work to provide a standard international education in the field of apparel, fashion and textile. Both the universities agreed to transfer credit, exchange students, faculty members and researchers and provide the students with scholarships. They will also work together in curriculum design and development and hold joint exhibition and fashion design competitions.


Vice Premier of China visits Confucius Institute at NSU

On May 26, 2015, the Confucius Institute of North South University arranged a grand reception ceremony in honour of the Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, Liu Yandong. The event was hosted in the new auditorium of NSU.

Prof. Amin Sarker, the Vice Chancellor of NSU, presided over the ceremony, which showcased a plethora of entertaining events, ranging from comical dialogues to poetry recitation, all in Chinese, by the local students.

Tofail Ahmed, MP and Minister of Commerce, graced the programme as the chief guest. Benajir Ahmed, Chairman, BOT, NSU, was the special guest.

Vice Premier Liu Yandong stated in her speech that she was highly impressed by the Confucius Institute and its activities. She placed importance on language as a carrier of culture and hoped for a bright future of the institute. She also expressed that China and Bangladesh are good neighbours and that China wishes to foster the bilateral relationship and trading between the two countries, both of which share the dream of a better world in the days ahead.

Liu announced that 100 NSU students will gain a full scholarship to China for summer camp and she also donated 1000 textbooks for the students of the Confucius Institute in NSU.

The Confucius Institute in NSU, one of the earliest Confucius Institutes worldwide, started its journey in 2005 with cooperation from Yunnan University in China.


MLIS team secures podium position at STEM Innovation Fair 

The Maple Leaf International School team secured the First Runners-up position with their project titled "The Battery that Breathes, and the Virus that Lives in it" in the STEM Innovation Fair organised by Education & Cultural Society (ECS) with the support of US Department of State Federal Assistance Award held on May 29, 2015. Team members Nafisa Tabassum, Sweta Majumder, Moumita Moazzem and Fahmida Islam won the prize which comprises a trophy and a financial award. The programme was graced by the US Ambassador as the chief guest and scientist Prof. Dr. Shamsher Ali as the guest of honour. Popular singer and actor Tahsan, who is a Fulbright Alumni, was present at the fair as the special guest. Three Maple Leaf teams participated at the event.


EDU collaborates with IIUM

East Delta University (EDU), Chittagong, and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) embarked on a new endeavour in institutional cooperation in higher education, research and innovation. Sayeed Al Noman, founder Vice Chairman of EDU, called on Prof. Dr. Abdel Aziz Berghout, Deputy Rector of IIUM, on May 28, 2015 at the own campus of IIUM. SM Abdul Quddus, Head of Centre for Human Development and Applied Social Science (CERDAS) of Malaysia, Rashed Al Karim, Assistant Professor, School of Business Administration of EDU were present on the occasion. They recognised the importance of increasing bi-lateral relationship between Bangladesh and Malaysia in the fields of education, research, culture and scholarship.
