EWU welcomes freshers in Spring 2017  

The orientation programmes of the newly admitted students for Spring 2017 were held in East West University (EWU) campus located at Aftabnagar, Dhaka on January 5, 2017. More than 1400 students got admitted at the graduate and undergraduate programmes in 14 different departments. Each department of EWU arranged individual programmes for their newly admitted students. The objective of the programme was to welcome the new students and orient them to the university facilities, faculty members, academic system and rules and regulations. 

Department of Business Administration arranged the event at the Auditorium Lobby of East West University. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of BOT, EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank attended the programme as the chief guest. Dr. Saidur Rahman Lasker, Member, BOT and Prof. Dr. M.M. Shahidul Hassan, VC of the University graced the occasion as the special guests. Prof. Dr. Tanbir Ahmed Chowdhury was the guest of honour. 

Prof. Dr. Anup  Chowdhury, Chairperson of Department of Business Administration chaired the programme. Among others, Kohinoor Biswas, Assistant Professor of Department of Business Administration presented the rules and regulations of the University to the newcomers.  

Speakers welcomed freshers at the EWU campus and encouraged them to try to work harder and be worthy citizens of the country. They also urged the newly admitted students to make the best use of the University resources and emphasised the need for high ethical standards. A large number of faculty and administrative officers were also present on the occasion.


Gobeshona International Annual Conference at IUB

A 4-day long programme titled "3rd Gobeshona International Annual Conference for Research on Climate Change in Bangladesh" was inaugurated on January 8, 2017 at the Auditorium of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) in Bashundhara, Dhaka. Organised by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) at IUB and supported by USAID, the conference was implemented from January 8-11, 2017. Almost 200 national and international participants including representatives from the government took part through six plenary and fourteen parallel sessions on various climate change issues and topics over the three days.

In his welcome speech, Prof. M Omar Rahman, the VC of IUB thanked ICCCAD and Gobeshona for their relentless efforts to promote research and create a culture of research, and urged the young people to endeavour with the progress. Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director of ICCCAD put the opening remark where he pointed out how Gobeshona and ICCCAD worked persistently for last one year to materialise the decisions taken in 2016 at the 2nd Gobeshona Annual Conference as well as the commitments made through the Paris Agreement.

The keynote was presented by Dr. Gregg B Walker, Professor of Communication, Oregon State University, USA where he shared his idea on the importance on connecting campus and community to address the long-term effect of climate change. 

Special guest of the session Nathan Sage, Director, Economic Growth Office, USAID highlighted on the importance of this conference since Bangladesh is one of the vulnerable countries affected by the negative impacts of climate change. Defining climate change as an unprecedented cause of migration, special guest Sarat Dash, Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration (IOM), Dhaka showed the link between migration and climate change and said how migration will be accelerated for the effects of climate change. Dr. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS) chaired the programme and through his concluding remarks, stated that collaborative efforts and involvement of young researchers are imperative to handle potential catastrophes of global climate. 

Prof. Milan Pagon, Pro-VC (Designate), IUB, a large number of researchers from different international and national institutions, faculties and senior officers of IUB, students, development activists from different national and international NGOs were present in the ceremony.


DIU introduces "Change Together" programme

To encourage physical exercise and sports spirit for sound health in our corporate culture and uphold the physical, mental and social fitness of the faculty members, officials and students, Daffodil International University (DIU) organised the "Change Together" programme on January 7, 2017. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, BOT, was present at the programme as chief guest at DIU permanent campus. 

For outstanding performance and contribution to DIU, faculty members and administrative personnel were awarded in different categories at the event. Tanvir Ahmed Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of Department of Textile Engineering and Liza Sharmin, Associate Professor of English Department were awarded "Chairman Award" for their contribution to the university. Md. Fuard Hossain Sarker, Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences Department and Kaushik Sarker, Senior Lecturer of Software Engineering Department were awarded "Vice Chancellor's Award" for contribution in innovation in teaching and learning (Google Class Room) and Rasel Hossen, Lecturer of Natural Sciences Department for research works (Google Scholar). Shamsi Ara Huda, Assistant Professor of English Department and Diljeb Kabir, Senior Assistant Director were awarded Inspiring Smile Award.   

Addressing as the chief guest, Md. Sabur Khan said, "To overcome our lackings, a combination to physical stamina and mental strength is must. We would like to change the society together, for doing so, we have to change ourselves first, and this initiative is the first step towards that holistic change." He also said there are many different workout programmes and many different types of equipment to keep us sound, but what we need is a plan to keep us motivated and consistent. 

The programme was also addressed by Prof. Dr. Yousuf M Islam, VC, Prof. Dr. SM Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Acting Pro-VC of DIU.

Cardio Care Specialized and General Hospital provided free medical checkup facilities such as blood sugar test, BP, height weight measurement and advice.


NUB hosts Faculty of Law graduation ceremony

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) held a graduation dinner on January 7, 2017 on the occasion of the completion of L.L.B. (Honors) and L.L.M. courses of the students of the Department of Law. Begum Ismat Ara Sadique, Minister of State, Ministry of Public Administration, was present as the chief guest at the programme.

Chairman of Northern University Bangladesh Trust Prof. Dr. A.Y.M. Abdullah, VC of NUB Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain, Pro-VC of NUB Prof. Dr. Anwarul Karim, Treasurer Md. Anwar Hussain and Registrar Lt. Col. (Retd.) Aqtedar Ahmed Siddiqui were present as special guests.

One of the foremost educationists of the country, Prof. Dr. A.W.M. Abdul Huq, Dean, Department of Law of NUB, presided over the meeting. In his speech, the Chairman of the BOT Prof. Dr. A.Y.M. Abdullah termed lawyers as the "architects of the social fabric" of a nation. He congratulated the Department of Law on its consistent success. He urged the graduating students to engage in world class legal professions and called upon students to establish the rule of law in the country by proper utilisation of technology. 

At the end of programme, Prof. Abdullah handed over the degrees to the graduates. The programme was attended by the organisational head of the Department of Law, Afroza Bilkis, Deans of various institutes, departmental heads, faculty members, officials and students.


BLAST

"Jiboner Golpe Cinema Banai", a short-film competition, was organised for young people by the Swedish organisation for Sexuality Education - RFSU funded Recognizing Consent and Choice (RCC) project led by the Bangladesh Legal Aid Services and Trust (BLAST) with the James P. Grant School of Public Health of BRAC University. The project recognises that every individual should have access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The Daily Samakal and Bangla Tribune were the media partners, while The Daily Star was the Youth Engagement Partner of the event.
