British Council and Bangladesh Shishu Academy launch reader development programme
The British Council, in partnership with Bangladesh Shishu Academy, has launched a new nationwide reader development programme titled "Story Time" for the primary and secondary level students in Bangladesh. This year, the programme bears the tagline "Porte Porte Boro Hoi". Children from all over the country can participate in the programme from 64 district libraries of Bangladesh Shishu Academy. This programme aims to reach over 20,000 students from all over Bangladesh.
The main objective of "Story Time" is to develop students' reading habit both in English and Bangla. The registration period for the first round competition will end by November 2016.
Sayeed Khokon, Mayor, Dhaka South City Corporation, launched the programme at the British Council, Dhaka University Campus office. He handed over different stickers, log books and posters to the children interested to engage themselves in the programme in the launching ceremony. Selina Hossain, Chairman, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Razina Akhter, Head of Library, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Jim Scarth, Deputy Director, British Council Bangladesh, and Sarwat Reza, Library Manager, British Council Bangladesh were present at the launching ceremony.
A Tree For Free at NSU
"A Tree For Free 3" has been successfully organised by Earth Club of North South University (NSUEC) from November 7-8, 2016. One thousand trees were given away for free to all the NSUers which included students, faculties, staffs, employees, deans, etc. This event was sponsored by RSRM and the radio partner was Radio Foorti. These 1000 plants were all potted and provided with tips to maintain them.NSUEC had distributed 500 trees on the first day and rest 500 trees on the second day. The response was so overwhelming that it only took 3 hours per day to distribute all the trees.A Tree For Free (ATFF) was launched in 2014 and since then, NSUEC has been giving away 1000 potted plants each year. The aim of this event is to make people aware of the dangers of environmental degradation and encourage them to take "small steps toward a better environment".
HR HULK at UIU: Green Is The New Orange!

HR HULK 2016 – in search of the next HR manager – was held on November 5 at United International University (UIU). The winner of this season is Fahrial Alam of Team SWOT CATS from Islamic University of Technology, winning the grand prize of 50,000 Taka. The runner-up and 2nd runner-up were Wasif Abdullah Choudhury of SWOT CATS from Islamic University of Technology and Muzdalifa Anzum of Kamikaze from North South University, who won the prize money of 30,000 and 20,000 Taka respectively. The daylong HR based competition was organized by UIU Human Resource Forum (UIU HRF). Chakri.com and BSHRM were the strategic partners of the event. The day-long competition consists of 4 intense rounds and 3 panel discussions.
The 48 best selected teams from around the country faced each other in the competition. The whole event was based on a knock-out format. The selected teams were from DU, JU, IUT, AIBA, BUP, Jagannath University, EWU, BRAC, SUST, KU, RU, IIUC and UIU. Students from many universities attended as spectators of the competition.
HR Forum is a wing of UIU Career Counseling Center (CCC) which acts as a platform for student where they can learn and get to know about the corporate world and know about HR works and they also responsibilities in the corporate sectors.
Jon Kabir from Indalo made a surprise appearance and entertained everyone by performing some of his popular tracks.
IUB honours students with SECS Awards 2016
An award ceremony at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) recognised 40 engineering students for their remarkable contributions in research and outstanding achievements in various competitions. The ceremony was held on November 16, 2016 at the IUB campus in Bashundhara. The VC Prof. M Omar Rahman was the chief guest at the event organised by the School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS). The VC congratulated the students on their achievements, and emphasised on the importance of research at universities. The Dean of SECS Prof. Shahriar Khan said that the research conducted in engineering by the developed world was a major factor in attaining their economic sustainability.
IUB students have won first prize at NASA Space Apps Challenge 2015, runners-up position at NASA Space Apps Challenge 2016, Best Flight Award in RC Aircraft competition 2016 in India, first position in
Ornithopter Competition 2015 in India, and many more.
Stamford hosts seminar on software application
On November 20, Stamford University's Department of Microbiology and Department of Computer Science and Technology organised a seminar on "The application of software: IT technology and Mathematics in Health and Medical Science." Fatinaaz Feroz, Vice President, Stamford University Bangladesh was the chief guest. Prof. Dr. Moudood Elahi Pro-VC was the special guest. Chairman of Department of Microbiology, Dr. Rashed Noor introduced the health and medical issues troubling Bangladesh while Dr. Kamruddin Nur, Chairman of Computer Science and Engineering introduced how IT and Health informatics can be used in health management. Distinguished speakers included Prof. Dr. Yngve Lamo, Department of Computer Science and Prof. Dr. Talal Rahman Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics, Bergen University, Norway. The program coordinated by Farahnaaz Feroz, Member, BOT, Stamford University Bangladesh.
AIUB VC attends IAU 15th General Conference
The VC of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB), Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna participated in the International Association of Universities (IAU) 15th General Conference in Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand from November 13-16, 2016, hosted by Siam University, Chulalongkorn University, Suranaree University of Technology and Asian Institute of Technology.
The IAU is an international non-governmental organisation, whose permanent secretariat is in Paris, France. It is a membership organisation bringing together universities, institutions of higher education, national and regional associations of universities.
Dr. Lamagna presented a paper on "Higher Education: Response to Local and Global Challenges". Internationalisation of higher education is expected to fulfill numerous purposes in addition to improving the quality of learning and the student experience.
EU arranges Book Fair 2016
Eastern University Writers' Forum and Eastern University Language Club jointly organised a Book Fair to encouraging the reading habit among the students at the university premises on November 21, 2016. The Book Fair continued from November 21 to 23, 2016.
Famous novelist Selina Hossain inaugurated the programme in presence of Tushar Abdullah, Head of News, Somoy TV, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rab, VC, Prof. Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Pro-VC, Treasurer, Deans, Registrar, Chairpersons, Publishers, Teachers, officials and students of EU.
