Prof. Muhammad Yunus talks on social business at ULAB
University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) invited Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus to deliver a keynote speech on Social Business on August 11, 2016.
Juditha Ohlmacher, Member of BOT, ULAB welcomed Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, popularly known as the "Banker to the Poor".
In his speech, Prof. Yunus highlighted the pertinence of social business in concurrent world. He said the purpose of social businesses is to collaborate with each other. Prof. Yunus stressed on the idea of three zeros – zero poverty, zero unemployment and zero net carbon emission.
Lamiya Morshed, Executive Director of the Yunus Centre, provided an overview of the mission of the Yunus Centre. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Prof. Imran Rahman, VC, ULAB. Earlier, Assistant Professor Niaz Morshed Patwary from ULAB School of Business presented the biography of Prof. Yunus. Member of BOT Taheerah Haq, Pro-VC Prof. H.M. Jahirul Haque, Registrar Lt. Col. Foyzul Islam (Retd.), many distinguished guests and foreign dignitaries, professors, faculties, students of ULAB were present in the talk.
EWU observes National Mourning Day
East West University (EWU) observed the National Mourning Day and paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due solemnity and honour marking his 41st death anniversary on August 15, 2016 at the university campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka. The national flag and the EWU flag were hoisted at half-mast as a mark of reverence at 5:34 am. The programme was followed by a munajat. The prayer was offered for eternal peace of Bangabandhu and his slain family members.
Chairperson of the BOT, EWU and former Personal Secretary of Bangabandhu, Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, VC Prof. Dr. M M Shahidul Hassan, Treasurer, Deans, and Chairpersons of the different departments, Registrar (Acting), faculty members and staff of the university were present on this occasion.
Business Plan Competition Summer 2016 at IUB
With an overwhelming participation of the students, "The Business Plan Competition" Summer 2016 was held at the School of Business of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at its Bashundhara campus, Dhaka on July 30, 2016. A total number of 450 students from 50 different teams participated in the competition where the theme was "Eco-Friendly" Products or Services for our Society.
The team Business Maestros was selected as an outstanding team and clinched the title of the competition while Architecture of Change and The Eco Minions were selected as the first and second runner-up respectively. Samiul Alam from Business Maestros received the "Best Presenter" award for his persuasive and splendid presentation.
The presentation award ceremony was graced by the Dean, School of Business, Prof. Dr. Sarwar Uddin Ahmed who shared the insights of the business plan competition and inspired the students to participate in upcoming competitions in and outside of IUB. He also congratulated the winning teams and handed over crests, certificates, and gift hampers to the winning teams. Sariat Rafa Khan (coordinator of this course), Shafiqul Alam, Bushra Sanjana, Siffat Shabnam, Zaima Ahmed, Chinmoy Das Gupta, Alima Akter, Zubayer Zakir Khan and Asma Banu were the faculties present in the prize giving ceremony.
Fall 2016 graduate admission test at NSU
The graduate admission test for Fall 2016 was held at North South University on August 12, 2016. A good number of students attended in written test for the privilege of getting a place in all branches of its arts, business and sciences and public health graduate programmes.
The high demand for places at NSU stem from the demand for its students from various employer groups. In spite of the current lean job market, NSU graduates are driving very well in getting jobs. In fact, hardly any of its recent graduates are unemployed.
Prof. Atiqul Islam, VC of the university said, "North South University has been preferred the private university for graduate subjects for years, and this is reflected every semester during the admissions."
The Vice Chancellor along with Deans, Chairs visited admission centers. It is mentionable that over 2000 students took part in the undergraduate admission test was held on August 6, 2016.
Seminar on "The Promise of Sustainable Tomorrow" at AIUB
One of the highlights of the 3-day Business Week 2016 Celebration of the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) was a seminar with Rubana Huq, Managing Director, Mohammadi Group as the distinguished guest speaker held on August 10, 2016 at the AIUB Auditorium. She has evoked the interest of the students as future professionals who will carve the promise of tomorrow for Bangladesh. Her inspiring words of wisdom stimulated the students to face the challenges of the future. Having a strong faith made her a strong woman playing various challenging roles in life. The presence of VC, Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, another successful woman in pioneering what AIUB is now since it was established 20 years ago provided more inspiration to the students and the audience as a whole. Both of them enlightened the students and cited experiences which are promises of a sustainable tomorrow.
