Compromise a must for fair polls: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that the crisis created on how to hold the 11th parliamentary election must be resolved through a mutual compromise.

“The crisis must be resolved through compromise. Otherwise, the government will pay heavily,” Fakhrul said while talking to reporters at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka on several contemporary affairs of the country.

Referring to the party’s vision 2030, Fakhrul said all necessary issues have been stated in the vision to hold the next general election in a free and fair manner.

Now it is the matter of the ruling quarter whether it will be accepted through dialogue, he said adding that his party did not get any feedback from the government side after frequently calling upon it for dialogue.

He said the prevailing stagnant political situation cannot be allowed to prolong. “I am hopeful that the good thing must come out.”

“I believe, good sense will prevail upon the ruling party and they will come to the path of compromise through dialogue,” he said citing instances of dialogues held with Pakistan in several times before the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

Khaleda Zia will appear before the countrymen immediately with her proposal over the poll-time supportive government to pave the way of an independent and inclusive general election, he said.

“I hope the proposal will be accepted by all people,” he added.

He said there is no space for democracy in the country as the ruling party has scrapped people’s rights to hold rally and speak freely.

“Where will we go? We will have to fight until out victory,” he said.

He said the court verdict on the 16th amendment to the constitution has plunged the government into a setback.

In a bid to divert people’s attention from the setback, the government has “kidnapped” columnist and writer Farhad Mazhar, he said.
