90% people in Dhaka now against AL: JP MP

A Jatiya Party lawmaker today told the parliament that around 90 percent people in Dhaka city have gone against the ruling Awami League-led government due to price hike of essentials.

“I am telling you the truth that 90 percent people of Dhaka city are now against the government. There are 18 seats in the city. I doubt whether Awami League will be able to win a single seat,” JP lawmaker Shawkat Chowdhury said.

Pointing to the price hike of rice, the JP MP said, adequate amount of rice is being produced in the country at present but price of rice is almost double than the previous year. “The government should look into the matter. It’s a big problem. Why price of rice would be so high at present?”

Criticising the government, the opposition MP said: “You [government] are telling that there is enough stock of rice. But it seems there is no stock of rice actually. Otherwise why price of rice will increase.”

Terming power a “slippery” matter, he warned the ruling party that it takes no time to lose power. “You [govt] should be careful about the consequences.”

Pointing to the increased rate of excise tax on bank account, Shawkat said people have gone against the government due to this.

Participating on the budget discussion, most MPs including treasury and opposition bench called upon the finance minister to withdraw the excise tax on bank account.
