Writ filed challenges media display of detained bloggers

This April 2 photo shows three arrested bloggers were produced before reporters at a press briefing at Detective Branch office in Dhaka.
A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday afternoon challenging the legality of law enforcers’ producing three detained bloggers before the newsmen last week.
Law enforcers produced Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, Russel Parvez and Mashiur Rahman Biplob, who were arrested for allegedly placing “derogatory comments about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)” on the internet, before the media on April 2.
Sultana Kamal, a human rights activist and executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra, and five teachers of Dhaka University jointly filed the writ petition the law enforcers’ action.
Exposing the three persons before the media and describing them responsible for committing offence is illegal and a violation of their constitutional rights of fair trial, the petition said.
The petitioners also urged the HC to order the government to pay compensations to the arrested persons and to ensure their security while in custody and after their release.
Earlier in December last year, the HC had directed the director general of Rapid Action Battalion, and commissioner of Dhaka metropolitan police not to present any accused who is under investigation or under trial before the media, the petitioners mentioned.
