TRC to read Llosa

The Indira Gandhi Culture Centre, Dhaka is organising An Evening of Book Reading by the noted literary group of Bangladesh, "The Reading Circle", of Mario Vargas Llosa's "Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter". The book has been translated by Helen R. Lane. The reading will be held at 5:00 PM on July 19, 2013 at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, H.No. 35, Road No. 24, Gulshan-1. Mario Vargas Llosa is the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He was born in 1936 in Peru and has since established an international reputation as one of Latin America's most prominent authors. Llosa's works are widely read for his diverse imagination and deft use of language that is quite remarkable. Mario Vargas Llosa's novel—"Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter" – is full of fizz as a giant pack of sherbet, wit, wisdom and wonder in equal proportions. The story line is comic on a grand scale, written with tremendous confidence and verve. Mario, an 18-year old law student and radio news-editor, falls scandalously for his aunt Julia, a 32-year-old divorced wife of a cousin. The progressively lunatic story of this love affair is interwoven with episodes from a series of radio soap-operas written by his friend Pedro Camacho. Llosa's energy and inventiveness manifested through this novel is extravagant and fabulously funny. The discussants from the Reading Circle of the book will be Dr. Niaz Zaman, Jackie Kabir Asfa Hussain, Tanveerul Haque, Syed Badrul Ahsan  and Shireen Sheikh Mainuddin. The Reading Circle is a group of readers who meet regularly and choose books for reading and discussing on several relevant occasions.  Established about seven years ago, the Reading Circle reads a wide variety of books written by authors from all over the world and attempts to popularize and promote works of Bangladeshi authors, in particular. It was instrumental in bringing writers such as Aruna Chakravarti, Amitav Ghosh and Mani Sankar Mukherji to Dhaka in the last couple of years. TRC has cordially invited everyone to participate on the occasion.
