Vehicular movements on the streets of the capital have become thin ahead of the 18-party opposition's rally this afternoon and Hefajat-e Islam's Dhaka ‘siege’ programme slated for Sunday.
The BNP-led 18-party opposition will hold a rally in the capital's commercial hub Motijheel to pressurise the government to fulfill its demand of restoration of the caretaker government system.
On the other hand, Hefajat threatened with the Dhaka siege programme to press home its 13-point demand.
No long distance buses left the capital since Saturday morning.
A few buses entered Gabtoli, Sayedabad and Mohakhali bus terminals from different districts of the country.
No long distance buses will set out for Dhaka after the noon, reported Bangla daily Prothom Alo quoting sources in the transport sector who preferred to be unnamed.
The number of public transport became thinner than the morning, some in the bus owners’ association said on condition of anonymity.
The authorities halted traffic movements on the road in front of Shapla Chattar.
They diverted the vehicles to Fakirapool Police Box, Shilpa Bank Bhaban in Motijheel and Ittefaq intersection due to the opposition alliance’s rally.
The initiative was taken “for the sake of peaceful programme” and to avert traffic congestion, said Hafiz Al Faruq, assistant commissioner (traffic) of Motijheel Zone.
