Thespians De Dhaka debuts with ‘The Sea of Silence’
A new theatre group, Thespians De Dhaka, will make its stage debut with its first production, “The Sea of Silence”, at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy this week.
The opening show will be held on Thursday at 7:15 pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall, the group said. Two more shows are scheduled for Friday at the same venue, the first at 5:45 pm and the second at 7:45 pm.
The play is written and directed by Tazuddin Tazu.
The story is set aboard a passenger ship travelling from Vietnam’s port city of Haiphong to London. The central characters are Sofia, her husband David, and their teenage daughter Jenny, who board the vessel carrying an unsettled past and a life shaped by silence.
As the voyage progresses, the sea becomes a quiet witness to their inner conflicts. On a stormy night, waves rise, clouds close in, and the sound of a mouth organ cuts through the darkness. In that moment, emotional boundaries begin to weaken. Memories surface, and long-hidden fears and secrets move closer to the surface.
The rhythm of the ship mirrors the emotional shifts of the characters. Suspicion enters their relationships. Love is tested. Guilt settles in. Each of them, in different ways, searches for a sense of release from what they carry.
With “The Sea of Silence”, Thespians De Dhaka is introducing itself through a restrained, character-focused narrative rather than spectacle. The production relies on atmosphere, memory, and psychological tension to shape its dramatic arc.
The group said tickets will be available at the entrance of the Experimental Theatre Hall before each performance.
