Parliament mourns Ramisa, Tofail Ahmed, Badruddin Umar and others

Condolence motion honours political leaders, national figures and four children who were victims of rape and murder

The parliament today mourned the death of eight-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa Akter, who was raped and brutally murdered, along with several political leaders, former MPs, and prominent figures, including Tofail Ahmed and Badruddin Umar.

At the outset of the session, the Jatiya Sangsad expressed condolences over the deaths of several leaders and former lawmakers.

They were Awami League leaders and former MPs AKM Rahmat Ullah, Dabirul Islam, ABM Anwarul Haque, Moslem Uddin, former Awami League minister Shafique Ahmed, and Abdul Matin, an independent MP of the 10th Parliament.

As per parliamentary tradition, the House pays tribute on the first day of a session to deceased ministers, MPs, and distinguished personalities at home and abroad, following a condolence motion moved by the speaker.

On the opening day of the second session today, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad placed the motion, which was adopted by the House. Members observed one minute of silence in memory of the deceased, followed by prayers led by ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan.

The parliament also expressed sorrow over the deaths of former BNP state minister Mizanur Rahman Sinha, Professor MA Mannan, former MPs Dewan Shamsul Abedin and GM Fazlul Haque; Jatiya Party MPs Syed Md Kayser, Abu Noor Mohammad Bahaual Haque, and Golam Sarwar Milon; and CPB MP Md Shamsuddoha.

Condolences were also offered for Speaker Hafiz’s wife, Professor Dilara Hafiz, as well as National Professor Sufia Ahmed, poet Helal Hafiz, Chhayanaut president Sanjida Khatun, singer Mustafa Zaman Abbasi, Nazrul singer Dalia Naushin, former BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdul Quddus, cultural figure Ataur Rahman, social welfare minister AZM Zahid Hossain’s mother Begum Zebunnesa, former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal general secretary Shafiul Bari Babu, Buddhist monk Dr Gyanishree Mahasthabir, and journalist Gazi Ruhul Amin.

The House also mourned the deaths of children Ramisa, Fahima Mim, Amina, and Tabassum Akhter, all victims of rape and murder.
