Right to defend human rights is also a human right
National Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh (NHRC) with Relief International organised a National Conference titled “Role of Human Rights Defenders: Protection and Promotion of Human Rights in Bangladesh” where a number of participants were present from different sectors of the society including university teachers, students, and journalists.
Professor Dr. Shah Alam, Member of Law Commission, Bangladesh presented a paper titled 'to provide security of Human Rights Defenders'. He focused on the security of working environment for Human Rights Defenders and their freedom to work, which is one of the main requirements if they want to work for the protection and promotion of Human Rights in Bangladesh. The level of development of any society or state can be judged through the prism of Human Rights. This is one of the reasons why entire world is witnessing an all-out movement for progress in the protection and promotion of Human Rights at both National and International level, He added.
Mr. Nazrul Islam, Country Director, Relief International urged the young participants to contribute for the promotion Human Rights. Involvement with Human Rights issues may be a dreamy project of youth. He also proposed to establish a Ministry of Human Rights for ensuring and monitoring Human Rights activities in a legal and organised way.
Rokeya Chowdhury, Lecturer of Law, University of Dhaka stressed upon the challenges faced by human rights defenders and suggested for coordinated action to alleviate those challenges. In the midst of her session the launching ceremony of a book titled “Guide book for Human Rights Defenders” written by Rokeya Chowdhury was held.
Addressing and admitting the vital role of National Human Rights Commission, Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah, Chairman, the Standing Committee, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, delivered his valuable speech as a chief guest. Finally, the Chair of the conference Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Chairman, NHRC said that the problem of defending human rights becomes intense when the state itself is the violator of human rights.
