Rescued by real cops
Police yesterday chased down two criminals who had been posing as detectives. The men were trying to abduct two private firm employees in a microbus with the motive of snatching Tk 5.3 lakh from them.
The incident happened at Mirajnagar in the capital's Kadamtali. The law enforcers arrested the impostors -- Zahirul Islam, 30, and Abul Kalam, 40.
They recovered Tk 5 lakh, a pair of handcuffs, a walkie-talkie after seizing the microbus with a press sticker on it. Two other impostors, however, managed to flee with Tk 30,000.
Farhad Alam, 27, and Saiful Islam, 28, employees of Madina Trading Corporation Ltd, fell victim to abduction at 12:00 noon.
They were returning to their office in Old Dhaka after withdrawing Tk 5.3 lakh from a nearby branch of Al-Arafah Islami Bank Ltd, police said.
Majharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kadamtali Police Station, told The Daily Star the impostors were following the employees by a microbus after the duo were heading to their office with the money.
The criminals intercepted Farhad and Saiful in front of their office, introducing themselves as detectives. They handcuffed the duo, saying "You are under arrest for carrying illegal things."
Quoting the victims, the OC said, the impostors forcefully took them into the microbus and made them lie under the seats and tried to speed away.
Another employee of Madina Trading observed the incident and informed the police, prompting the law enforcers to set several check posts at different intersections in the area.
At one stage, the microbus crossed a check-post at Mirajnagar defying a police signal and a police team led by OC Majeharul started chasing the microbus.
The team finally managed to stop it at Mirajnagar. "As soon as the microbus was halted, we arrested the duo but two others managed to escape," the OC added.
Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media) of DMP, told The Daily Star that if such a situation crops up, people should immediately inform the police at their nearest police station.
"If people are confident enough to identify the persons, who are impersonating themselves as detectives, as fake they can detain the culprits and hand them over to law enforcers," he added.
